WHAT DO TUTORS DO?

Paving The Way to Equal Education

As a tutor, your main responsiblity is to work directly with a student or group of students to prepare them for the AMC 10 and advance their proficiency in competition or problem-based mathematics. However, at Saintly, we emphasize that the job of a teacher spans far further than that. Tutors should be making an active effort to improve their own teaching and curriculum. Although Saintly will provide you with the nescessary curriculum, we appreciate when tutors adapt it to fit their unique style. Tutors should dedicate to spending at least at least 30 minutes outside of sessions for preparation in addition to their one hour weekly sessions.

Tutoring sessions can take a variety of forms. Based on your own preferenece, you can lead one-on-one sessions, small group discussions, large classes, or seminar-based lectures. Saintly tutoring sessions typically include warm up, quick lesson, practice questions, and interactive visualization or game. We believe that the the only way to learn math is to do it and encourage both our tutors and students to actively try difficult problems and apply their learning.

Here is the full list of responsibilities

  • Teach mathematics in a clear, effective, and engaging way
  • Guide students toward understanding through problem based learning
  • Adapt curriculum, lessons, and explanations to match your style and student's needs
  • Prepare for tutoring sessions and provide appropriate practice resources when nescessary
  • Communicate with students through Saintly's approved communication system
  • Provide beif feedback and check-ins after sessions, and one evaluation per month
  • Report concerns about student safety, inappropriate behavior, or other issues to Saintly staff
  • Participate in peroidic tutor training and check-ins

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Leaders and Learners

Saintly values leadership and initiative over knowledge. We believe everybody has the ability to grow into dedicated learners. We look for the following characteristics in our tutors:

Adaptability

Tutors should be flexible and be able to take the pre-set Saintly curriculum and apply it to their teaching. They should prioritize their students needs and learning style, as well as their own abilities and make curriculum that is perfect for them.

Patience

Teaching is difficult. We expect tutors to be able to work with vastly different people and work with their unique learning style and pace.

Communication

To know is different than to understand. We expect our tutors to be able to clearly communicate why something works, not just that it does. Communication should be done in a way such that even daunting topics, like math, can be available for everybody.

Initiative

We aren't just looking for tutors, we are looking for dedicated members of the saintly team who can take initiative and grow our program. Tutoring is just one of the many responsibilities associated with working on Saintly, and we hope to get tutors who will actively contribute outside of their repsonsibilities, without being told what to do.
