Introduction

The median can be statistical or geometric, but regardless of in what field they are applied medians represent the mathematical middle.

select_check_box What is it?
The statistical median of a set is the value at the exact middle index of a set sorted in ascending order. It is less dependent on the values of external numbers, and indicates the true middle of a dataset
select_check_box Why Study?

Because the median is almost entirely independent of any other values and thus does not include our get weighed down by outliers, it is considerd the true middle of a dataset.

Finding the Median

The process of finding the median effectively consists of organizing the set in ascending order and "crossing off" values from both ends until you reach the center. If you are left with two values at the center (a set with an even number of elements), the median is the arithmetic mean of the two numbers.

Properties of Medians

Median's are generally considered the most accurate measure of center because the numerical value of outliers will have no impact on it. I cannot emphasize enough that it is the true center of a dataset. I also mentioned this concept of a geometric median. This is a line that is drawn from a vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side. In reality, this isn't so different from a median by itself because it remains at the middle of the side it intersects. Medians are also used to find quartiles for box plots, which measure the distribution of a dataset.

Conclusion

The median is the center of a dataset. It is accurate because it does not account for outliers. Medians are essential for understanding the distribution of a dataset.
